TMJ Causes

There are many causes that have been proposed for TMD. Patients usually have more than one causative factor contributing to their TMD making diagnosis and treatment complex.

Some of the factors believed to be causes of TMD are:
  • Trauma-to neck, face and jaw, i.e. automobile accidents, falls, sports injuries, etc.
  • Bruxism-clenching and/or grinding of the teeth
  • Malocclusion or misalignment of the jaws to each other or to the base of the skull
  • Loss of teeth (especially posterior)
  • Muscle Hyperactivity
  • Posture
  • Stress
